Barloworld Mongolia Recognized for Innovative Machining Practice by Caterpillar
<p>Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – April 2025 – As part of Caterpillar’s ongoing initiative to showcase global Best Dealer Practices, Barloworld Mongolia has been recognized for its new innovative technique: “Easy Centering After Arc Spray Applying on Top Deck.” Developed in Barloworld Mongolia’s machine shop, the method solves a long-standing challenge in engine block reconditioning—accurately locating the center of the cylinder block after arc spray coating. Traditionally a time-consuming and error-prone task, this centering process has now been simplified and standardized, thanks to a creative and cost-effective solution developed in-house. The method involves preparing the workpiece based on the cylinder block model, installing a centering tool, and machining the top deck surface before sandblasting and arc spraying. The surface is protected using tape and anti-bonding agents. Finally, the technician aligns the top deck symmetrically, significantly reducing errors and improving turnaround time. According to the documentation submitted to Caterpillar, the benefits are clear: - Faster and easier cylinder block centering - Reduced risk of symmetry and machining errors - Improved shop floor efficiency and productivity The initiative was introduced by Enkhbold Erdenebayar, a machinist at Barloworld Mongolia, and formally documented by Bat-Erdene O., Technical Engineer. Their hands-on experience and collaborative effort not only improved internal processes but now stand as a benchmark for other dealers within Caterpillar’s global network. The process leverages cutting-edge tools including the Smart Arc Advanced Electric Wire Arc Thermal Spray System, CNC engine block axis boring machinery, and high-precision sandblasting systems—highlighting Barloworld Mongolia’s dedication to operational excellence and innovation. We sat down with Enkhbold Erdenebayar to learn more about the origin of this initiative. Interview with Enkhbold Erdenebayar Q: Please introduce yourself. A: My name is Enkhbold Erdenebayar. I work as a machinist in the Machine Shop at Barloworld Mongolia. Our team is responsible for repairing and restoring components for Caterpillar and other heavy equipment brands on a daily basis. Q: Can you tell us about the new innovative idea you developed? A: When repairing 3500 series engines, depending on the degree of wear, we often perform metal spraying on the main surface. After that, the surface must be machined back to the standard size, which requires the block to be symmetrically aligned with the cutting tool. My improvement focuses on simplifying that alignment process to save time and eliminate symmetry errors. Since centering was both complicated and time-consuming, I introduced a method to make it easier and more efficient. Q: What was the most important factor when implementing your idea? A: The most important thing was preserving the original symmetry provided by the manufacturer. I also discussed the process with my colleagues to make sure it wouldn’t interfere with subsequent operations after the initial machining. Q: What results did you achieve? A: The outcome exceeded expectations. In the past, surfaces with significant wear required two rounds of metal spraying. Thanks to improved alignment, we’re now able to complete the job with just one round, which saves 5–6 hours of repair time per engine block. Q: Any other key insights to share? A: Yes—this method isn’t limited to the 3500 series. It can also be used on other engine blocks such as the C18, C27, and 3412. Q: Any advice for your fellow machinists? A: Always look for new ways to improve. Innovation starts with curiosity. The D9900 ushered in an era of Caterpillar power solutions, diversifying the company’s customer base and opening avenues for growth. More than fifty years ago, “Old Betsy” was donated to the Smithsonian’s Museum of American History and is deemed to be of significant historical importance. 5. “Low Ground Pressure” Undercarriage In 1955, Caterpillar introduced a special modification called “low ground pressure” (LGP) undercarriege, allowing machines to work in extreme weather conditions in places like Antarctica. It’s still an option on our machines today. 6. Elevated Sprocket The elevated sprocket is considered an engineering marvel. It was designed in 1977, allowing machines to work harder, last longer and provide a smoother operator ride. Today it’s standard on all meduim and large Cat engines. 7. Cat Differential Steering System The Cat Differential Steering System was designed in 1977 and allows machines to “turn on dime,” increasing productivity. 8. Autonomy Caterpillar has been investing in autonomous technology more than 30 years, and in 2024, Caterpillar celebrated 10 years of autononmous operations with over 630 large mining trucks running worldwide. From 1994 to 1995, Caterpillar ran the first two prototype Cat 77C autonomous mining trucks at a Texas...autonomy capabilities. Most recently, we implemented autonomous solutions scaled to serve the quarry and aggregate industry. 9.
